# Road freight transit time calculator with EU driving rules

RNJ Transport’s free transit time calculator spreads the driving hours of a trip over days under the EU driving and rest rules. Enter the road distance, an average speed and the departure time, then choose one driver or two. You see the total time and the arrival day. Loading, ferries and driving bans are not included.

We filled in an example. Change any number to see your own result.

Arrival

Wednesday 07:15 (day 3 of the trip)

- With two drivers: 34 h, arrival Tuesday 16:00 (day 2 of the trip).
- Driving, breaks and rest only. Loading, waiting, ferries, traffic and driving bans add time.

The button adds these numbers to the price form at the bottom of this page.

- One driver may drive 9 hours a day, with a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours and at least 11 hours of rest.
- Two drivers drive in turns: up to 18 hours, then both rest 9 hours with the truck parked.
- In our illustration, 1,500 km at 60 km/h takes 49 hours 15 minutes with one driver and 34 hours with two.
- Trucks over 3.5 tonnes have a speed limiter set at 90 km/h, so a long trip averages less than that.

## How the calculator plans the trip

The calculator divides the distance by the average speed to get the driving hours. With one driver, it splits them into days of up to 9 hours. Every day over 4.5 hours gets a 45-minute break, and 11 hours of rest follow each day. With two drivers, the truck drives up to 18 hours, then both drivers rest 9 hours.

The example starts on Monday at 06:00 with 1,500 km at 60 km/h, the illustration from our transit time guide. One driver arrives on Wednesday at 07:15\. Two drivers arrive on Tuesday at 16:00.

## What the calculator leaves out

The result counts driving, breaks and daily rest only. Add the stops below for a real plan, and check that the arrival falls inside the receiver’s opening hours. The calculator stops at 3,000 km, because longer trips need a weekly rest.

- Loading, unloading and waiting at both ends
- Ferry crossings, where a driver can rest on board with a sleeper cabin
- Sunday and public holiday driving bans, for example in Germany
- The weekly limit of 56 hours of driving per driver
- Traffic, border checks and road works

## Frequently asked questions

1. How long does a truck take for 1,000 km?
About 29 hours 10 minutes with one driver and 16 hours 40 minutes with two, at an average of 60 km/h. One driver drives 9 hours, rests 11 hours and drives the last 7 hours 40 minutes, with a break on each day. Loading, waiting and ferries add time.
2. Why does the example use 60 km/h?
Because a long trip averages well below the 90 km/h speed limiter of trucks over 3.5 tonnes. Towns, traffic, fuel stops and border areas slow the truck. Change the speed in the calculator if you know the average for your route.
3. Is a truck with two drivers faster?
Yes, on long trips. Two drivers drive in turns, so the truck moves for up to 18 hours before a 9-hour stop. On a trip that one driver finishes in one day, about 540 km at 60 km/h, a second driver saves only the 45-minute break.
4. Does the calculator include Sunday driving bans?
No. Check the bans on your route yourself. Germany, for example, bans trucks over 7.5 tonnes on Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00, with exceptions. Our post on holiday driving bans lists the dates around Christmas and New Year.
5. Is the result RNJ Transport’s transit time?
No. The result is an illustration under the driving rules. Our time for your load depends on the route, the date, the loading windows and the truck. Send the route, the date and the load size in the price form, and we give you the time for your date. You can also call us.
