Road and sea route to the Faroe Islands

The road leg from Klaipėda to the Hirtshals ferry port in Denmark is about 1,960 km. Trucks drive through Poland, Germany and Denmark. From Hirtshals, ships sail to Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. The sea crossing comes on top of the road leg.

Customs documents for the Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands are under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark, but they are not in the EU or the EEA. A load from Lithuania needs an EU export declaration. All goods must be cleared through Faroese customs (TAKS) on arrival in the Faroe Islands. Mostly, the shipping agent does this electronically. We arrange the customs declarations with a trusted partner.

TAKS charges Faroese VAT on the invoice value plus the shipping costs, customs duty and excise tax. According to TAKS, goods produced in a country with a Faroese free trade agreement are exempt from customs duty when they have a certificate of origin. These countries are the EU countries, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. The EU and the Faroe Islands have had a free trade agreement for goods since 1997.

For a load from the Faroe Islands to Lithuania, the goods need an EU import declaration when they arrive in the EU. We check the export papers with the sender before loading.
