Route from Lithuania to Latvia
The usual road route from Klaipėda to Riga is about 310 km long. The truck drives towards Kaunas and then turns north to Šiauliai. It enters Latvia at Meitene and follows the A8 road through Jelgava to Riga. Under EU rules, one driver can drive this distance in one day.

Road charges and driving rules for trucks in Latvia
Latvia charges trucks for a period of time, not per kilometre. The charge covers goods vehicles over 3,000 kg and vehicle combinations over 3,500 kg. It applies on the main and regional state roads listed in the law, but not on their sections inside towns and villages. The A8 from Meitene to Riga is one of these roads.
The carrier buys the charge online before the trip, for 1 day, 7 days, 30 days or 1 year. The rate depends on the emission class of the truck and the number of axles. The current rates have applied since 1 March 2026. The carrier pays, and RNJ Transport includes the charge in the price we agree with you.
On the Lithuanian part of the route, Lithuania charges trucks per kilometre with its Via Toll system from 1 January 2027.
- Driving bans: Latvia has no general weekend or public holiday ban for trucks.
- Winter tyres: the duty from 1 December to 1 March applies to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
- Studded tyres: no vehicle may use them from 1 May to 1 October.

Documents for loads between Lithuania and Latvia
Both countries are in the EU customs territory, so EU goods travel between them without an export declaration and without customs formalities. Every load travels with a CMR consignment note. Add the invoice and a packing list, so the receiver can check the goods at delivery.
If the route crosses a country outside the EU, the load travels with a transit document. Goods from outside the EU that are not yet cleared also need a transit document. Tell us before loading.
