Euro pallet dimensions, weight and how many fit in a truck

RNJ Transport plans pallet loads around the EPAL 1 euro pallet. EPAL states its size as 1,200 × 800 × 144 mm, its weight as about 25 kg and its safe working load as 1,500 kg. A standard curtainsider trailer takes 33 euro pallets on the floor. When you book, send us the count, size, loaded height, weight and stacking.

  • An EPAL 1 euro pallet measures 1,200 × 800 × 144 mm and weighs about 25 kg, according to EPAL, the European Pallet Association.
  • EPAL gives the euro pallet a safe working load of 1,500 kg. When laden pallets are stacked on a solid, even floor, the bottom pallet may carry at most 5,500 kg.
  • A standard curtainsider trailer, about 13.6 m long and 2.45 m wide inside, takes 33 euro pallets or 26 industrial pallets (1,200 × 1,000 mm) on the floor.
  • Every EPAL euro pallet made since 1 January 2010 is heat treated under the ISPM 15 standard. The IPPC mark with the code HT is on the middle blocks.
  • Norway asks for ISPM 15 marked wood packaging on goods from EU countries too, according to Mattilsynet, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

Euro pallet dimensions and weight

The EPAL 1 euro pallet is 1,200 mm long, 800 mm wide and 144 mm high. It weighs about 25 kg. EPAL allows 3 mm more or less on the length and width, and up to 7 mm more on the height. The European standard EN 13698-1 describes the same pallet type: 800 × 1,200 mm, with 9 blocks.

The euro pallet has 11 boards, 9 blocks and 78 nails. A forklift can enter it from all four sides. EPAL also sets other pallet sizes. The table compares the euro pallet with the EPAL industrial pallet and the EPAL half pallet.

Load capacity of a euro pallet

EPAL gives the euro pallet a safe working load of 1,500 kg. When laden pallets stand on top of each other on a solid, even floor, the bottom pallet must carry no more than 5,500 kg. These figures describe the pallet only. Your goods, your packing and the truck often set a lower limit.

The truck sets the limit on a full load. A standard curtainsider trailer carries about 24 tonnes of goods on 33 floor places. That is about 727 kg per pallet on average (24,000 ÷ 33). If your pallets are heavier, the trailer reaches its weight limit before the floor is full. Stacked two high, 66 pallets share the same 24 tonnes, about 364 kg each.

The pallets count in the gross weight. 33 empty euro pallets weigh about 825 kg. Include them in the weight you send us.

A damaged pallet may not carry its full load safely. EPAL treats a pallet as not fit for exchange when a board is missing, a board is broken across or diagonally, or a block is missing or split so that more than one nail shank shows. For rotten or heavily splintered wood, EPAL no longer guarantees the safe working load. Replace such pallets before loading.

How many euro pallets fit in a truck?

A standard curtainsider trailer takes 33 euro pallets on the floor. The trailer is about 13.6 m long and 2.45 m wide inside. Three euro pallets stand across it, with the 800 mm side across, and 11 rows fit along it. The 33 pallets use 13.2 m of the floor, so about 0.4 m stays free.

Other pallet sizes change the count. Our loading metres guide converts every pallet size into loading metres. The counts below are for one layer on the floor of a standard curtainsider trailer.

  • Euro pallets, 1,200 × 800 mm: 33 on the floor, in 11 rows of 3.
  • Industrial pallets, 1,200 × 1,000 mm: 26 on the floor, in 13 rows of 2.
  • Half pallets, 800 × 600 mm: 66 on the floor, 2 in each euro pallet place.
  • Stacked two high: 66 euro pallets or 52 industrial pallets, if the height and the weight allow.

Marks on a genuine EPAL euro pallet

A genuine EPAL euro pallet carries the EPAL logo in an oval on its left and right corner blocks. The middle blocks on the long sides carry the IPPC mark for heat treatment, the producer’s EPAL licence number and the year and month of production. One middle block also has the EPAL control staple.

EPAL has its licensed producers and repair operations inspected. A pallet without these marks can still carry goods, but it is not an EPAL pallet. It may also lack the ISPM 15 mark that some borders ask for.

  • EPAL in an oval: on the left and right corner blocks.
  • IPPC mark: the IPPC symbol, the country code, the producer’s IPPC number and HT for heat treatment, on the middle blocks.
  • EPAL ID: the producer’s licence number and the year and month of production.
  • EPAL control staple: on one middle block only.
  • Repair nail with the EPAL logo: on a middle block, only on a repaired pallet.

ISPM 15 heat treatment and when you need it

ISPM 15 is the international standard for wood packaging in trade, published by the IPPC. Treated wood carries a mark with the IPPC symbol, a country code, a producer code and a treatment code such as HT. Heat treatment means at least 56 °C for 30 minutes without a break, through the whole piece of wood.

Every new EPAL euro pallet has been heat treated under ISPM 15 since 1 January 2010. EPAL does not allow treatment with methyl bromide. ISPM 15 covers crates and dunnage too. Packaging made only of plywood or OSB, or of wood 6 mm thick or less, is exempt.

Norway applies ISPM 15 to goods from EU countries. Mattilsynet, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, says the rules apply to imports and exports between Norway and the EU. Unmarked wood packaging must not be used again in Norway until it is treated and marked there.

The EU asks for the same mark on wood packaging that enters the EU, in Article 43 of Regulation (EU) 2016/2031. That article does not cover loads between EU countries, such as the Netherlands to Lithuania.

Our own trucks run between Lithuania and Sweden. Partner carriers take loads to and from Norway. On loads between Lithuania and Norway, use pallets with the IPPC mark, and check wooden crates and dunnage too.

Pallet data to send when you book

Five pallet details decide which truck fits your load. They are the pallet count, the pallet size, the loaded height, the gross weight and whether the pallets can be stacked. Send all five when you book. Our team plans the truck from them, and one contact person follows your load to delivery.

Collect the details in five steps. Tell us before loading if one of them changes. A pallet that is higher, heavier or not stackable can need a different trailer.

  1. Count the pallets

Count every pallet. If some are stacked, say how many floor places they need.

  2. Give the size

Write the pallet type and the size in mm, for example euro pallet, 1,200 × 800 mm.

  3. Measure the loaded height

Measure from the floor to the top of the goods. The euro pallet itself adds 144 mm.

  4. Weigh each pallet

Give the gross weight per pallet and in total, with the pallet and the packing.

  5. Check stacking

Say if the goods can carry another pallet on top, and how many high.

Pallet checklist before you book

The checklist holds the pallet data we need for one load, with an example for each line. The example is an illustration: 18 euro pallets from Lithuania to Norway. Copy the lines into your email, or read them to us when we call you back. The ISPM 15 line matters for every load to or from Norway.

Frequently asked questions

  1. What are the dimensions of a euro pallet?

1,200 × 800 × 144 mm. That is the EPAL 1 euro pallet, as EPAL states it. EPAL allows 3 mm more or less on the length and the width, and up to 7 mm more on the height. The European standard EN 13698-1 describes the same pallet type with 9 blocks. A forklift can enter it from all four sides.

  2. How much does a euro pallet weigh?

About 25 kg empty, according to EPAL. An EPAL 2 industrial pallet weighs about 35 kg, and an EPAL 6 half pallet about 9.5 kg. The pallets count in the gross weight of your load. A full floor of 33 empty euro pallets weighs about 825 kg, so include the pallets in the weight you send us.

  3. How much weight can a euro pallet carry?

1,500 kg, which is the safe working load EPAL states. When laden pallets stand on top of each other on a solid, even floor, the bottom pallet may carry at most 5,500 kg. In a truck the limit is often lower. A standard trailer takes about 24 tonnes, which is about 727 kg per pallet on 33 floor places.

  4. How many pallets fit in a 13.6 m trailer?

33 euro pallets or 26 industrial pallets on the floor. A standard curtainsider trailer is about 13.6 m long and 2.45 m wide inside. Euro pallets stand 3 across in 11 rows. Industrial pallets stand 2 across in 13 rows. Half pallets take 66 places. Stacked two high, the numbers double if the height and the weight allow.

  5. Do euro pallets need an ISPM 15 mark inside the EU?

Usually no. Article 43 of Regulation (EU) 2016/2031 asks for the ISPM 15 mark on wood packaging that enters the EU from outside. That article does not cover loads between EU countries. Norway applies ISPM 15 to goods from EU countries too. Every EPAL euro pallet made since 1 January 2010 is heat treated and marked.

  6. What is the difference between a euro pallet and an industrial pallet?

The size. A euro pallet is 1,200 × 800 mm, and an industrial pallet is 1,200 × 1,000 mm. The EPAL 2 industrial pallet is 162 mm high, weighs about 35 kg and has a safe working load of 1,250 kg. On a standard trailer floor, 33 euro pallets fit, but only 26 industrial pallets.
