Road freight for companies in Lithuania Minor and Klaipėda port

From its base in Klaipėda, the largest city of Lithuania Minor (Mažoji Lietuva), RNJ Transport plans full truckloads for companies across the region. The region holds Klaipėda port, the Klaipėda Free Economic Zone and Šilutė, most often called its capital. Our own trucks run from here to Sweden on the Karlshamn ferry, and checked partner carriers take other routes.

  • Klaipėda State Seaport handled 39.04 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, according to Statistics Lithuania.
  • The Klaipėda Free Economic Zone covers 412 ha and has more than 100 businesses with over 4,500 employees.
  • Klaipėda has freight ferries to six ports: Karlshamn, Trelleborg, Kiel, Travemünde, Fredericia and Køge.
  • On the official map of ethnographic regions, Lithuania Minor matches the historical Klaipėda Region.

Klaipėda port and the free economic zone

Klaipėda State Seaport is a universal deep-water port on the Klaipėda Strait. Its cargo includes fertilisers, containers, oil products, ro-ro trailers and grain. The port has 102 km of railway track inside it. Draugystė station in Klaipėda ends the core EU railway that starts in Vilnius. Trucks from inland Lithuania arrive on the A1 motorway, which ends in Klaipėda.

The Klaipėda Free Economic Zone was founded in 2002 and lies close to the port. Its plants work mainly with plastics and chemicals, electric vehicles and their parts, and offshore and large metal structures. More than 50 clients from 16 countries work there.

Šilutė, the Nemunas and the rest of the region

Outside Klaipėda, Šilutė is the region’s largest town, and EKGT notes that people most often call it the capital of Lithuania Minor. Its plants produce furniture for export, peat substrates, dairy products, flour and cast stone. Neringa and Pagėgiai belong to the region in full, and so do Priekulė, Dovilai and Kretingalė in Klaipėda district.

Along the Nemunas, a regional road links Klaipėda with Šilutė, Jurbarkas and Kaunas. The Nemunas and the Curonian Lagoon also form an inland waterway to Kaunas, used for cargo voyages and oversized loads. The region’s best-known places are the Curonian Spit and the Nemunas delta.

Routes by sea and road from Lithuania Minor

From Klaipėda, freight ferries cross to Sweden, Germany and Denmark. Loads to and from Sweden cross on the Karlshamn ferry in our own trucks. German loads go with partner carriers, by the Kiel or Travemünde ferry or by road through Poland. Latvia is reached on the coastal road through Palanga to Būtingė.

For Poland, the A1 leads to Kaunas, where Via Baltica continues south to the Kalvarija crossing.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Can you take goods from a Klaipėda port terminal to Šilutė or further inland?

Yes. We collect full loads at the port terminals and in the free economic zone. Then we deliver them to Šilutė, Kaunas, Vilnius or abroad. Give the terminal, the release date and the load size. One contact person handles the load from the terminal to the delivery address.

  2. Do you deliver to companies in the Klaipėda Free Economic Zone?

Yes, when the load is not dangerous goods. The zone covers 412 ha close to the port, and its plants work with plastics, chemicals, vehicle parts and large metal structures. We bring full loads of packed materials and equipment from Western Europe and from other Lithuanian cities. Chemicals classed as dangerous (ADR) need another carrier.

  3. How do you move loads from Lithuania Minor to Sweden?

On our own trucks whenever one is free, using the Klaipėda–Karlshamn crossing. RNJ Transport runs most of its own-truck loads on this route. If our trucks are busy, we put the load on a checked partner’s truck, which may use the Trelleborg ferry instead. One contact person in our Klaipėda office stays with you the whole time.

  4. Is Klaipėda part of Lithuania Minor?

Yes. Klaipėda city lies in Lithuania Minor on the 2025 ethnographic map approved by EKGT, together with Neringa, Pagėgiai and the Šilutė area. Gargždai, next door, belongs to Žemaitija, so the regional boundary runs close to Klaipėda. RNJ Transport’s office is in Klaipėda, at Šilutės pl. 105A.
