Swedish road charge from 26 March 2027: goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes pay

RNJ Transport runs full loads between Lithuania and Sweden on our own trucks. From 26 March 2027, the Swedish road charge (vägavgift, the Eurovignette) also covers goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Today it starts at 12 tonnes. Vehicles under 12 tonnes pay one third less. A standard tractor unit with a curtainsider trailer already pays.

  • From 26 March 2027, the Swedish road charge covers motor vehicles over 3,500 kg used for goods transport, under SFS 2025:47. Today it starts at 12,000 kg.
  • Light tractor units of 3,500 kg or less with a semi-trailer also pay from 26 March 2027, when the combination weighs more than 3,500 kg.
  • Vehicles under 12,000 kg pay one third less. A Euro VI vehicle in CO2 class 1 with up to 3 axles pays 510 EUR a year, against 764 EUR from 12,000 kg (SFS 2024:293).
  • The charge is paid in Swedish kronor. The Government sets the amounts for each year before the end of November. The 2027 amounts were not yet published on 24 October 2026.
  • Foreign trucks pay for all Swedish motorways and six listed roads. A charge paid in Sweden is also valid in Luxembourg, according to Skatteverket.

Swedish road charge: what changes on 26 March 2027

The Swedish road charge (vägavgift) is a fee for a day, a week, a month or a year. Until 25 March 2027, it applies to goods vehicles and combinations of 12,000 kg or more. From 26 March 2027, it also covers motor vehicles over 3,500 kg used for goods transport. SFS 2025:47 sets this date for the amended law.

Key dates

  • Under 12 t, ≤3 axles 510 EUR
  • Under 12 t, 4+ axles 849 EUR
  • 12 t+, ≤3 axles 764 EUR
  • 12 t+, 4+ axles 1,274 EUR

A second group pays from the same day. A light tractor unit of 3,500 kg or less pays when it pulls a semi-trailer and the combination weighs more than 3,500 kg. In both groups, the vehicle is meant for goods transport on the road or is used for it. The amended law is SFS 2024:293.

Vehicles and combinations under 12,000 kg get their own, lower rates. The Government bill sets them one third lower than the rates for heavier vehicles. The euro rates for 12,000 kg and more stay as they are in the law today. A tractor unit with a semi-trailer for 40 tonnes is in the group of 12,000 kg and more.

The change follows EU law. Under the amended Eurovignette Directive, Directive (EU) 2022/362, a country can no longer charge only goods vehicles of 12,000 kg or more from 26 March 2027. Sweden applies the change through the Eurovignette agreement, which it shares with Luxembourg.

Swedish road charge amounts for 2027

The law sets the amounts in euros, and carriers pay them in Swedish kronor. For a Euro VI vehicle in CO2 class 1, a year costs 764 EUR with up to 3 axles and 1,274 EUR with 4 or more axles. Under 12,000 kg, the same year costs 510 EUR and 849 EUR.

The rate depends on the number of axles and the CO2 emission class. In CO2 class 1, the Euro emission class also counts. CO2 class 5 has the lowest rates. Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, counts the axles of the truck or of the whole truck combination. Carriers buy the charge for a day, a week, a month or a year.

The euro amounts are converted to kronor for each calendar year. The law uses the euro rate in kronor on the first working day of October of the year before, as published in the Official Journal of the EU. If the new amount differs from the old one by less than 5%, the old amount stays. The Government sets the amounts before the end of November.

On 24 October 2026, the 2027 amounts in kronor were not yet published. The 2026 amounts come from SFS 2025:918, issued on 23 October 2025. In 2026, a Euro VI vehicle in CO2 class 1 with 4 or more axles pays 14,414 SEK a year or 147 SEK a day. For vehicles under 12,000 kg, the Government sets the kronor amounts before 26 March 2027.

Roads and payment for foreign trucks in Sweden

A truck registered outside Sweden pays the road charge for all Swedish motorways and for six listed roads. The charge must be paid before the truck drives on one of these roads. Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, is the authority for foreign vehicles. The charge is sold online and at some fuel stations, on behalf of the Eurovignette countries.

One day runs from 00:00 to 24:00. A trip on a charged road from 21:30 to 02:30 needs a charge for two days. Every payment is stored in a central database. The police can check any vehicle in that database without stopping it. The data that was once on a paper certificate is now in that database.

A charge paid in Sweden is also valid in Luxembourg, and a charge paid in Luxembourg is valid in Sweden. Skatteverket can refund a charge for a year, a month, a week or a day. The refund covers the days left from the day the application arrives, minus a fee of 25 EUR.

Besides all motorways, the charge applies to foreign trucks on six roads.

  • E4 from Uppsala (Gnista junction) to the Finnish border.
  • E10 from Töre to the Norwegian border.
  • E12 from Holmsund to the Norwegian border.
  • E14 from Sundsvall to the Norwegian border.
  • E22 from Karlskrona (Vedeby junction) to Norrköping (Skälv junction).
  • E65 from Svedala to the port of Ystad.

Swedish-registered vehicles and exemptions

A truck registered in Sweden pays the road charge for every road in Sweden. The owner pays for one year at a time. Transportstyrelsen, the Swedish Transport Agency, sends a payment slip in the month before each new period and checks that the charge is paid on time. The truck may not be used before the charge is paid.

Swedish vehicles that start to pay on 26 March 2027 have a fixed first period. That period starts on 26 March 2027, and the owner pays at the latest 30 days later. A Swedish light tractor unit with a coupling for a semi-trailer pays according to the highest total weight its combination may have.

Some vehicles do not pay. The law lists vehicles of the Swedish Armed Forces, the police, rescue services and road maintenance, when they carry visible markings. Vehicles 30 years or older that are not used in commercial transport do not pay. From 26 March 2027, zero-emission vehicles up to 4,250 kg do not pay either. For a combination, the motor vehicle decides. For any exemption, check with Skatteverket or Transportstyrelsen.

The Swedish road charge on a full load to or from Sweden

For a full load on a standard tractor unit with a curtainsider trailer, 26 March 2027 adds no new charge. Such a combination weighs more than 12,000 kg, so it pays the Swedish road charge already today. The 2027 amount in kronor can still change with the euro rate, as the 5% rule explains.

RNJ Transport runs its own trucks between Lithuania and Sweden, mostly with full loads. The trucks cross the Baltic Sea by truck ferry from Klaipėda to Karlshamn or Trelleborg. Our tractor units with curtainsider trailers are in the group that pays today. Road tolls are included in the one price we agree with you for the load, and you get one invoice.

The new rule matters most for goods vehicles over 3.5 and under 12 tonnes, and for light tractor units with a semi-trailer. A shipper that runs its own small trucks in Sweden plans the charge for them from 26 March 2027. For a price on a full load, send the route, the date and the load size in the request form.

  • Ask for an all-in price that includes road tolls for every load to and from Sweden in 2027.
  • For contracts that continue after 26 March 2027, agree in writing how the price covers road tolls.
  • If your company runs its own goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes in Sweden, check with Transportstyrelsen which period and amount apply.

Worked example: the Swedish road charge for a 5-axle truck combination in 2026

The example shows the Swedish road charge in 2026 for one Lithuanian tractor unit with a semi-trailer. The numbers are an illustration, not an RNJ Transport price. The combination has 5 axles and is Euro VI, CO2 class 1. With 4 or more axles, it pays the higher rate.

The kronor amounts come from SFS 2025:918. The 2027 amounts follow before the end of November 2026, and the table may then change. A day runs from 00:00 to 24:00, so a night trip over midnight needs a charge for two days.

Frequently asked questions

  1. When does the Swedish road charge change?

On 26 March 2027. From that day, the Swedish road charge covers motor vehicles over 3,500 kg used for goods transport. Light tractor units with a semi-trailer also pay when the combination weighs more than 3,500 kg. Until then, the charge starts at 12,000 kg. SFS 2025:47 sets the date for the amended law, SFS 2024:293.

  2. Do vans pay the Swedish road charge from 2027?

Only vans over 3,500 kg. A goods vehicle with a total weight of 3,500 kg or less does not pay. The exception is a light tractor unit that pulls a semi-trailer, when the combination weighs more than 3,500 kg. Zero-emission vehicles up to 4,250 kg do not pay. Vehicles under 12,000 kg pay one third less than heavier ones.

  3. How much is the Swedish Eurovignette in 2027?

The law sets the levels in euros. A Euro VI truck of 12,000 kg or more in CO2 class 1 pays 1,274 EUR a year or 13 EUR a day with 4 or more axles. Under 12,000 kg, the same truck pays 849 EUR a year or 8 EUR a day. The Government sets the 2027 amounts in kronor before the end of November 2026.

  4. Is the Swedish road charge valid in other countries?

Yes, in Luxembourg. Sweden and Luxembourg take one common road charge under the Eurovignette agreement. A charge paid in one of the two countries is valid on the charged roads of the other. Other countries, such as Lithuania, Poland and Germany, have their own toll systems, and carriers pay each of them separately.

  5. Does a 40-tonne truck from Lithuania pay the Swedish road charge?

Yes, and it already pays today. A tractor unit with a semi-trailer for 40 tonnes is in the group of 12,000 kg or more. On Swedish motorways and the six listed roads, a foreign truck needs a valid charge before it starts. In 2026, a Euro VI combination with 4 or more axles in CO2 class 1 pays 147 SEK a day or 14,414 SEK a year.

  6. Who pays the Swedish road charge on my load?

The carrier pays it. For a foreign truck, the law makes the owner, the driver or the person who decides on the use of the vehicle liable. The charge then becomes part of the transport price. With RNJ Transport, road tolls are included in the one price we agree for your load, and you get one invoice.
