Road freight in Aukštaitija for companies in north-east Lithuania
Across Aukštaitija, the ethnographic region of north-east Lithuania, companies can order full truckloads from RNJ Transport. Its plants make furniture, textiles, machinery, cables and food. Via Baltica crosses the region through Panevėžys. We do not carry the fertilisers and acids made in Jonava and Kėdainiai, because they are dangerous goods.
- About 0.6 million people live in Aukštaitija’s municipalities, which stretch from Radviliškis and Joniškis to Zarasai and Visaginas.
- Vilnius and Kaunas are not part of any ethnographic region on the official 2025 map.
- Norwegian-owned furniture and textile plants in Panevėžys tie Aukštaitija to the Norway route.
- Fertilisers and acids from Jonava and Kėdainiai are dangerous goods (ADR), which RNJ Transport does not carry.

What Aukštaitija makes and ships
Aukštaitija has no single industry. Panevėžys makes cables, trailer bodies, compressors, furniture, textiles, malt and starch. Utena brews beer and processes meat, Ukmergė builds machine tools, and Rokiškis makes cheese. Radviliškis, Rokiškis and Kėdainiai build farm machinery. Jonava and Kėdainiai also have large chemical plants, whose loads we do not carry.
Three towns without their own page add to the list. In Biržai, a mill spins flax yarn and weaves fabric, and bakeries and breweries work nearby. Kupiškis works with peat, wood, bricks and clothing. Pakruojis makes bread, linen textiles, ceramics and parquet, and its dolomite quarries ship loose stone that needs tipper trucks.
| Town | Main products |
|---|---|
| Panevėžys | Cables, trailer bodies, compressors, furniture, textiles, malt, starch, beer |
| Utena | Beer, meat, bread, knitwear, metalwork |
| Ukmergė | Machine tools, dairy, bread, sewing |
| Rokiškis | Cheese and dairy, farm machinery, rapeseed oil, wood products |

| Radviliškis, Joniškis and Pakruojis | Farm machinery, knitwear, pellets, feed and pet products, ceramics, parquet |

Main roads and railways in Aukštaitija
Via Baltica is the region’s north-south spine. It runs from Kaunas on the A8 to Panevėžys, around the city on the A17 bypass, and then north via the A10 and Pasvalys towards Riga. The E272 crosses it at Panevėžys, linking Vilnius with Šiauliai. Further east, the road from Kaunas to Daugavpils passes Jonava, Ukmergė, Utena and Zarasai.
From Vilnius and Kaunas, the core EU railway runs through Kėdainiai to the Radviliškis junction. A second line leads east via Panevėžys, Kupiškis and Rokiškis to the Eglainė crossing to Latvia. Our trucks stay on the road, and these lines matter for plants that also use rail.
Routes to Klaipėda, Latvia and Poland
From Aukštaitija, Swedish and German loads travel west to Klaipėda by the A1 or through Šiauliai. RNJ Transport sends its own trucks on the ferry to Karlshamn. Riga is closer than Klaipėda for the northern towns, and the Saločiai–Grenctāle crossing on Via Baltica serves Panevėžys, Pasvalys and Biržai. Poland is reached through Kaunas and Kalvarija.

Frequently asked questions
-
Do you collect full loads from any town in Aukštaitija?
Yes. We collect in Panevėžys, Utena, Ukmergė, Rokiškis and the smaller towns, from the plant or the warehouse door. For domestic and Swedish loads we check our own trucks first, then a checked partner. Send the town, the address and the loading day.
-
Do you carry fertilisers or chemicals from Jonava or Kėdainiai?
No. We stay away from fertilisers, acids and any other chemical that counts as dangerous goods (ADR). We do carry other goods from these towns, such as machinery, packed food, wood products and building materials. When in doubt, send us its safety data sheet first.
-
Can you take a load from Aukštaitija to Norway?
Yes. A checked partner carrier drives such loads. The Norwegian-owned furniture and textile plants in Panevėžys are typical shippers on this route. Norway needs customs declarations on both sides, handled by a partner customs broker you book with us. One person on our team follows the whole trip.
-
Can you bring goods from Western Europe to Aukštaitija?
Yes. Inbound loads from the Benelux and Germany are the routes we run most. Partner trucks come through Poland and Kalvarija, then follow Via Baltica to Panevėžys or the A1 towards Kaunas and the eastern towns. Tell us where the goods are, where they go and when.
-
Are Vilnius and Kaunas part of Aukštaitija?
No. The 2025 EKGT map leaves Vilnius and Kaunas outside all ethnographic regions. Towns around them, such as Jonava, Kėdainiai, Ukmergė and Kaišiadorys, are in Aukštaitija, and we collect in all of them. Šiauliai, Kelmė and Naujoji Akmenė, to the west, are part of Žemaitija instead.
