Kaunas plants, warehouses and the free zone

The Kaunas free economic zone was founded in 1996 and covers 534 ha between the city and Karmėlava. More than 150 companies with about 9,500 jobs work there, in automotive and industrial electronics, food, construction products and life sciences. The zone connects straight to the A1 and the A6 and lies close to the airport.

Logistics has grown inside the zone: a logistics park of 190,000 m² built in stages, a parcel centre of more than 22,000 m² opened in 2024, a furniture warehouse of 60,000 m² and a beverage warehouse of 12,000 m². In the city, plants make food and drink, glass, furniture, textiles, retail fittings and machine tools. About half of the output goes to the EU and the Nordic countries.

Kaunas roads and the European-gauge railway

Three main roads meet at Kaunas. The A1 links Klaipėda with Vilnius, the A5 carries Via Baltica to Marijampolė and Poland, and the A6 heads north-east through Jonava and Utena to Daugavpils. North of the city, the A8 leaves the A1 at Sitkūnai towards Panevėžys and Riga.

The Palemonas terminal handles containers and trailers on the European gauge as well as the Lithuanian one. A standard-gauge line from the Polish border has reached it since 2015, and the first train from the Netherlands arrived in July 2021. The Rail Baltica line from Kaunas to Vilnius is still a plan.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Do you collect full loads in the Kaunas free economic zone?

Yes. We load at plants and warehouses in the zone, and the trucks join the A1 straight away for Klaipėda port or Vilnius. Loads abroad go through Poland or by ferry. Tell us the company, its gate in the zone, the hour you load and how many pallets there are.

  2. Can you deliver from Germany or the Netherlands to Kaunas, Garliava or Karmėlava?

Yes. Inbound loads from Germany and the Benelux are our main routes. Checked partner trucks cross into Lithuania at Kalvarija and come up Via Baltica to Kaunas, about 95 km from the border. We deliver to the free economic zone, Garliava, Karmėlava and city addresses.

  3. Do you carry furniture, packed food and building materials from Kaunas to Scandinavia?

Yes. These are typical curtainsider loads. Our own trucks serve Sweden through Klaipėda and Karlshamn when one is free. For Norway, a partner carrier that we check drives the load, and the declarations Norway asks for are made by a partner customs broker.

  4. Can you take goods to or from the Kaunas Intermodal Terminal?

Yes, by road. We collect goods that arrive by rail at Palemonas and deliver them to your site, or bring export goods to the terminal. Tell us the booking details of the rail operator. RNJ Transport does not book the rail leg itself.
